UDS: FreeRDP and Remmina

I work in a primarily Windows environment and have to remote in to Windows servers and desktops. Upon installing Ubuntu 11.10 tsclient was not installed and I found the Remmina package. I was very happy with the results, but being in the UDS session on FreeRDP and Remmina I was astounded by the rich feature set that will be available in 12.04.

FreeRDP developers at UDS-P

The amazing thing about the Remmina project is that it is all done by one developer right now. As a non-developer I certainly hope that more developers in the Ubuntu Community will consider becoming involved in this project. If you would like to get involved in the project you can get all the information at http://www.freerdp.com/ and they have a mailing list: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freerdp-devel. If you are a sysadmin that simply needs a fantastic RDP client you can add the following ppa: https://launchpad.net/~chihchun/+archive/freerdp

Um, just so you know, Vinagre that ships with GNOME 3 supports RDP. There was a reason why tsclient was no longer available.

@oxwivi: can you link to the actual source code implementing this? Have you tried using RDP in Vinagre? All I could find was an incomplete rdp plugin in the vinagre git repo. Besides that, there seem to be a lot of confused users on forums who thought vinagre supported rdp in latest versions but could not actually use it or have the function displayed in vinagre.

And even then, if vinagre had RDP support, it should be using FreeRDP otherwise it’d be useless as an RDP frontend

    Hi
Ive used remmina for a while and i added the PPA from your post but now remmina complains that it doesnt have a rdp plugin. I removed remmina and reinstalled it, i see the reminna-rdp-plugin getting installed but remmina still complains. I’m on Kubuntu 11.10. Any idea’s?

@Steve: we’re working actively on having Remmina updated to make use of FreeRDP 1.0. To get a stable Remmina you would unfortunately need to have the old version of Remmina which was using the older 0.x development branch of FreeRDP. For this, you can use Vic’s PPA which is on the Remmina website instead.

We’ve got some progress done this week with Remmina integration with FreeRDP 1.0, it currently works but only for RemoteFX sessions. There will be more to come.

@oxwivi: taking a close look at vinagre, I found the part where it was just invoking rdesktop. Even then, rdesktop is old, buggy and unmaintained. Plus, the vinagre front-end provides barely no options, which makes rdesktop even more useless than it currently is.
